Treating and Preventing Brittle Nails
.
The Key to Healthy Nails: Moisture
Water sustains life - it's that simple! True for our planet, our bodies and, yes, our nails. Use of a moisturizer or emollient for treating and preventing brittle nails is a recommendation supported by authoritative organizations such as the Canadian Dermatology Association and the U.S. National Health Institutes. Other reputable organizations also support this recommendation. The rationale for this recommendation is based on hydrating and maintaining an adequate water content in the nails. This helps to reverse the deleterious effects (splitting, crumbling, peeling, tearing, flaking nails etc.) associated with brittle nails. * Hochman LG et al. Brittle nails: response to daily biotin supplementation. Cutis 1993; 51(4): 303-5. ** Walters KA (ed.). Dermatological and Transdermal Formulations. Drugs and the pharmaceutical sciences, vol. 119. Unfortunately the available moisturizing creams are conceived for use on skin. Their use on nails is problematic from a number of perspectives**: 1) unlike skin, nails are much thicker and for proper absorption, require long-term contact with the hydrating components of the cream (e.g. humectants, lipids, etc.) and 2) cream does not hold to the nail's surface resulting in a messy, inconvenient and, ultimately an ineffective treatment.
Introducing SoftCoat Nail Moisturizing Lotion - a proven topically applied treatment that effectively hydrates dry and damaged brittle nails. Shortly after its application, SoftCoat's liquid component evaporates to leave behind a dry tack-free coat of emollient (urea) which adheres to the surface of the nail. Upon drying, it goes to work by providing and trapping moisture within the nail plate. The result: stronger, smoother, healthier, more beautiful nails. Read more... |
