Brittle Nails and Contributing Factors There are a number of factors that contribute to the development of brittle nails. Having said this, some factors are more causative than others. In other words, there are some key factors and behaviours that are more likely to cause damaged nails.
A study* was designed to look at the following key factors: manicures and the frequency of having these, the use of nail polish removers, the frequency of use of hand moisturizers, family history of brittle nails, and gender.
Over one hundred individuals participated in this study. Nail clippings were analyzed and a questionnaire was filled by each participant to determine health and behaviour. * Stern DK et. al. J Am Acad Dermatol 2007;57:31-6.
